Report Meeting 1 Sheffield

Meetings 1 & 2

A word of welcome by the head teacher of Silverdale, Mrs. Helen Storey.

René (co-ordination) welcmes everybody and thanks Graeme for being host for this meeting. He regrets that Austria was not allowed to join. If possible Mrs. Marianne Schneidhofer will try to join the next meeting and join the projectwork as "silent partner" with Bilingual Schule Wiener-Neustadt (Austria).

René gives every participant a USB-stick on which they can find the PP-presentation & the official applicationform. The main items for the meetings in Sheffield are:

  • Confirming the programme
  • Adding new items (not necessary)
  • Deciding what the pupils will have to prepare
  • Fixing a date for the next meeting

A final report is due in two years.

The different participants introduce their school:

  • KAMSA: Koninklijk Atheneum Aarschot (Belgium):
    • About 400 students
    • Sport section will join the Comenius programme

    • Bilingual teaching (English) in:
      • Geography
      • History
      • Sport
    • Sports oriented: pupils can choose between:
      • Sport
      • Art
      • Music
    • The sports are organised in association with partners from out of school
  • Kapocs Primary and Hungarian-English Bilingual School (Hungary):
    • Specialised in English: a lot of the subjects are taught in English
    • Sport lessons every day
    • Joined a previous Comenius project on present, past and future of European youngsters

    • Mixed comprehensive school: ± 30 % ethnic students (India, Somalia, China, etc.)
    • Good exam results
    • Great facilities (especially sports and technology)

What to do in year 1:

  • Design a logo for this project. It is possible to organise a contest among the students. Eventually, the winner can join the next meeting. During next meeting we will choose the best logo. The logo should be sent to René by the end of february 2010.
  • Select 1 or 2 attractive, local sports that are not in the curriculum and can be played in a team.
  • Do research on history, rules, equipment and exercises and write it down in a logistic manual.
  • Make a movie or PP-presentation in which you show all these elements, so PE teachers can implement this sport in their programme.
  • All documents and film must be sent to Belgium and your national organisation before Easter. You will get empty Word documents (that way we all use the same form).
  • The final report of year 1 will be made by René in May 2010.
  • Keep a list of all activities and dates in your school that concern the project.

What to do in year 2:

  • Invent a new sport (this can be a combination of two existing sports) that can be done in a team. Again, work out rules, equipment, exercises, etc.
  • Students can already think about it during year 1.
  • You can still continue work on year 1.
  • As an example we watch the Czech movie on Floorball.

Meeting 3

René gives a brief presentation on national agencies policies:

  • It is very important to have a good contact within the organisation.
  • Regulations are different for every country. For example: In Belgium there have to be more teachers travelling than pupils. Check these specific details with your N.A.
  • The national agencies organise special meetings for teachers. Make sure at least one teacher attends these meetings to get all the useful information from the agency.
  • Graeme gives all participants in Sheffield a document of attendance. Also, keep your boarding passes, because they are sometimes required to prove your attendance.
  • Be sure you know what you need before the final deadline (June 2011). Additional form are possible for each country. Information: your N.A.
  • Time schedule for this project:
    • Year 1 starts now.
    • End of year 1:
      June 2010.
Aarschot will provide the first year report in May 2010 digitally. Please inform if you need a specific form for your country.
    • Year 2 starts in September 2010 (meeting in October 2010).
    • The final meeting will be in Italy where we will present the results.
    • Everything should be ready before Eastern 2011.
    • KA Aarschot will put all the info together before June 2011 (a book with all the information from all the schools and a dvd with the final results).
  • Ask your national agency if you have to fill in specific documents for the final report.

How to implement the project in your school:

  • Form different groups in a class and make every group work on a specific part of the project (e.g. history, equipment, rules, exercises).
  • History, equipment and rules should be presented in a book form. The film should focus on the exercises and the game as such.
  • Do not make the film too long (approximately 15 minutes).
  • Suggestion: add famous players or unusual places where the game was played.
  • We all use the same MS Word document with fixed layout, provided by KA Aarschot (René) soon.

Next meeting:

  • Our next host will be France (Perpignan)
  • Date: from 17 March until 21 March 2010.
  • Please communicate how many students will participate.
